Hong Kong International Drummer Festival (HKDrumFest) proudly presents the Asia-Pacific Drummer Competition to be held in July 2019. First of its kind in Hong Kong, the competition is opened to drummers in Asia-pacific region to serve as a platform for drummers to meet, exchange and to learn from established drummers, as well as to gain valuable on stage performing experience, regardless their age and origin.

The Asia-Pacific Drummer Competition 2019 is divided into 4 categories: 

​

Category 1. Young Person Junior– Hong Kong (HKYJ) 

Application is open to Hong Kong resident with HKID card at age 12 or below (born on or after 1 January, 2007) 

 

Category 2. Young Person Intermediate – Hong Kong (HKYI) 

Application is open to Hong Kong resident with HKID card at age 17 or below (born on or after 1 January, 2002

 

Category 3. Young Person Advance – Asia-Pacific (APYA) 

Application is open to Asia-Pacific region at age 14 or below (born on or after 1 January, 2005) 

 

Category 4. Open – Asia-Pacific (APO) 

Application is open to applicant from Asia-Pacific region at any age. 

 

 

ADMISSION

Material for submission 

I. Entry Form  

• Entry Form should be submitted online (www.hkdrumfest.com)  

 

II. Audition Video  

• All competition entries must be accompanied by Link to an online video (YouTube/Facebook/Tudou, etc.) of the applicant performing for 2 minutes, on an acoustic kit, (Electronic Kits are not permitted) with no other musicians or live musical accompaniment. 

• No editing／splicing is accepted. 

• Only the first two minutes of each video will be viewed. 

• The entrants’ face must be clearly visible.

• Entrants should say "Hong Kong International Drummer Festival" to the​ camera at the beginning of the video

 

 

Admission period 

I. Submission of Entry Form 

• Must be submitted:

  • Hong Kong Category: March 1st - June 21th (GMT+8 1700) 

  • Asia-Pacific Category: March 1st - June 5th (GMT+8 1700) 

  • After successful submission, applicants will receive the set pieces and rudiment to be assessed in 1st round competition

• Overseas participants must submit travel visa application with their government entity in this period.
   

II. Submission of Audition Video 

• Deadline:

  • Hong Kong Category: June 21th (GMT+8 1700) 

  • Asia-Pacific Category: June 5th (GMT+8 1700) 
     

Registration fee 

• The registration fee is USD $100 / HKD $800 / RMB ¥700 per participant per category in the competition, is non-refundable, and must be received by the appropriate application deadline.

• If you are not selected as a finalist, you will be refunded part of the registration fee ( USD $50 / HKD $400 / RMB ¥350 ), and the handling fee (if any) generated by the transfer platform will be borne by the participants.

COMPETITION DETAILS

​

I. Preliminary selection 

• Applicants Must be Selected by video audition. 

• Participants will be shortlisted in each category for the 1st round of competition. The result will be announced 2 days after deadline on www.hkdrumfest.com, Facebook Page and via email to the finalists. 

II. 1st round

   Date: 17-19 JULY 2019

 

 

Competition items：

（Category 1,2, 3 and 4)

• 1 song on participants' choice among 3 songs specified by HKIDF

• Random Pick of 1 rudiment out of 3 rudiments (Scores will be provided to applicants upon application) 

 

III. Final – Drum Battle (3 participants each per category) 

   Date: 19 JULY 2019

   Time: 4pm

   Venue: The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong 

               (Address: Hang Shin Link, Siu Lek Yuen, Shatin, N.T., Hong Kong)

• 1 song on participants' choice among 3 songs specified by HKDrumFest

Category 3:

 

• 1 song on participants' choice among 3 songs specified by HKIDF 

• Single stroke (crotchet, quaver, semiquaver, demisemiquaver, triplet, sextolet) 

• Free drum solo battle, everyone arrange one drum solo within 32 bars 

 

Category 4:

 

• 1 song on participants' choice among 3 songs specified by HKIDF 

• Single stroke (crotchet, quaver, semiquaver, demisemiquaver, triplet, sextolet) 

• Free drum solo battle, everyone arrange one drum solo within 32 bars 

• Trade 16/32 on styles specified by HKIDF at site, with live band accompaniment 

  

Judging criteria 

Participants will be marked out of 10 on six separate competencies, including technique, accuracy, musicianship, color and timbre, creativity and innovation, and virtuosity. With the agreement of the jury panel, the finalist with the highest score will be the winner. The decision of the jury panel is final.
